Single-case experimental designs (SCEDs), which are increasingly used in the fields of education and psychology, are unique methods that allow questioning the causal and functional relation between dependent and independent variables among the participants or between conditions (Kratochwill et al., 2010 Maggin et al., 2017 Maggin & Odom, 2014 Tekin-Iftar, 2018). Based on the obtained results and considering the data extraction process, we presented various recommendations for the researchers that will use the PlotDigitizer program for the quantitative analysis of single-case graphs. The results showed that PlotDigitizer could be an alternative to other programs as it is free and can run on many current and outdated systems, and it is valid and reliable as it is nearly perfect. Based on our sampling, we calculated intercoder and intracoder Pearson correlation coefficients. Besides, using the values we digitized, we recalculated the 23 effect sizes presented in the original articles for validity analysis. We performed the digitization of 6.846 data points on three different computers using 15 hypothetical graphs with 20 data series and 186 graphs with 242 data series from 29 published articles to accomplish the goal. In this study, we aimed to analyze the validity and reliability of the PlotDigitizer software program, which is widely used in literature and an alternative to other data extraction programs, on computers with different operating systems. Researchers typically use data extraction software programs to extract raw data from the graphs in articles. Plotdigitizer allows its users to share the extracted data into numerous formats, that includes, CSV, JSON, MS Excel, Array. With Datathief, you can only export the extracted data into “.txt” files. Further, you can customize the level of magnification. PlotDigitizer is equipped with a zoom panel. This tool magnifies the portion of graphs around the cursor, so you can more accurately mark points. The zoom panel is a very useful tool, especially when you are extracting data points manually. With PlotDigitizer, you can extract the data from linear and nonlinear scales (logarithmic, date, polar, time, inverse). Axis scalesĭatathief has limited axis scales. Conversely, Datathief has no such useful features. You can crop, zoom, flip, rotate, and scale the image. In PlotDigitizer, all required image editing attributes are embedded. We need to edit the image, for example, cropping the image to remove the unwanted portion. Many a time, the image or scanned document available to us is not perfect. On the other side, PlotDigitizer, besides common formats, accepts several image formats. Images supportĭatathief accepts only standard image file formats, like PNG, JPG, GIF. In contrast, Datathief has an old, outdated GUI. PlotDigitizer provides a modern, aesthetic, and easy-to-use interface and user experience, which could save significant time for newbies. PlotDigitizer shines out among all digitizers in the user interface and user experience. Further, you can calculate distance, angle, and area on an image. With PlotDigitizer, you can extract data from XY, bar (horizontal), bar/column (vertical), ternary, polar, maps, and pie/doughnut. There is no support for other types of graphs. Graph typesĭatathief only works with XY graphs and polar diagrams. Unlike in Datathief, there is no need to install any other external dependencies. PlotDigitizer is also available for all operating systems. However, you need to install Java from its official website to execute the software. Since Datathief is coded in Java, it would run in any OS: Windows, Linux, and macOS. To access all the features, you have to purchase the pro version. Though the free version has limited features, they are ample enough for basic data extraction. PlotDigitizer, in contrast, offers its users a FREE online version.
